Evaluation of Well-Being Status of Near-Threatened Gangetic Leaf Fish Nandus nandus (Hamilton, 1822) in the Kawadighi Haor: Implications to Haor Fishery Management in the Northeastern Bangladesh

This study evaluated the status of well-being wild Nandus nandus in Kawadighi Haor through morphometric and gastrointestinal indices local people’s perceptions. Basic macroscopic morphology tract (GIT), viscera somatic index (VSI), hepatosomatic (HSI), condition factor (K), length–weight relationships, gut histology were analyzed from regular commercial catch. The GIT includes a tube-like esophagus, tapering stomach, tubular intestinal region, rectum, all which have clinically normal shapes conditions. VSI HSI values fluctuate throughout year, indicating periodic variation food content availability ecosystem. (K) was generally stable, with minor deviations December. mucosa, submucosa, muscularis, serosa identified stomach N. showed histological characteristics. There numerous proliferated villi tunica but no histopathological abnormalities found gut. These findings suggest that current population is favorable condition. However, people reported some potential threats might be concern for long-term survival this species. results present will useful effective sustainable stock management fishery other floodplain ecosystems.
